About this deal

Although legendary Swiss metal band Celtic Frost disbanded in 2008, a new expansive vinyl box set entitled Danse Macabre will see the light of day on November 25th, 2022. Recorded in Hanover at the start of 1987, “Into The Pandemonium” was not an easy album to make, the band’s experimental ambitions often at odds with their label’s concerns.

While the recordings are rough, they’re very easy to listen to and surprisingly better quality than I would have expected for what amounts to a microphone in a rehearsal studio. The first full album was released the next calendar year and you can tell the band have gone a little nuts with the addition of a brass band for the introductory opener (who reappear for other songs such as “Dawn of Meggido”). S., “Danse Macabre” brings together the band’s recordings from those years, capturing their boundary-pushing ambition and creative zeal. The release here has most (but I don’t think all) of the various edition tracks, and the intro is damn scary (think horror film) before the trash comes in.Certainly, especially with the non-traditional instruments, you get the feeling from this point that Celtic Frost were a band prepared to push a few boundaries. Dawn Of Megiddo’ is a wonderful example of how the band’s meticulous battle campaign was being realised as an integrated whole as opposed to extreme metal with some odd stuff bolted on, with the addition of timpani played by American drummer Reed St.

The Sign of the Usurper came about because I collaborated with BMG once again in 2017 for the reissue of the original Celtic Frost albums, which was also a very pleasant and professional experience. Opener “Mexican Radio” is a far cry from their earlier material in terms of style, and the first opening track to actually be a song. And into this situation, the promoter from the Hell’s Heroes Festival in Texas came and asked us if we would be interested in playing the first few Celtic Frost albums in their entirety. Third disc is the debut full album proper, To Mega Therion, and both at the time and retrospectively, considered a black metal landmark.Replete with iconic cover art by HR Giger, "To Mega Therion" imposes its dark majesty from the off with the orchestral bombast of "Innocence And Wrath", before launching into the savagery of the hook-laden "The Usurper". That they did so in the face of adversity at almost every turn makes this story even more incredible. We all said before we make this decision, we all meet in a rehearsal room somewhere and play a few of these songs and see what it even sounds like.
