About this deal

The average kettle will last ten years. This is based on the experiences of Which? Connect Panel members who told us how long they kept their previous appliance before it needed to be replaced due to a fault. Auto cut-off problems are classed as any issues involving the kettle switching on or off. This could be that it regularly cuts off during the boiling process, or that you’re unable to switch it off whatsoever. Not only is this dangerous, it will also result in higher energy bills for you. How we calculate the best and worst kettle brands You can buy a no-frills own-brand kettle for less than a tenner, so what exactly do you get when you pay more? Read our article on common kettle and toaster faults and how to fix them for more information. How can I dispose of my old kettle? Table notes: The customer satisfaction and fault-free after five years percentages are based on a survey of 9,103 Which? Connect Panel members who own kettles, conducted in May 2021. Table last updated 7 June 2021.

Less than a third of the kettles we test are rated as notably quiet: we measure the noise level in decibels during boiling and note any unusually piercing or annoying sounds. If you often make tea for one, or just want to save energy, look out for a kettle with a low minimum fill level (less than 300ml). Some kettles will force you to boil as many as four cups' worth in one go, leaving you waiting longer and wasting water and energy. The worst brand had an average customer satisfaction score of just 59%, compared with the 84% achieved by the best brand. Read Do fast boil kettles use more energy? for more information. How to save money when using your kettle There’s a noticeable difference between how long the best and worst brands last, but as you can see in the graph below, the majority of models will last at least nine years if you take care of them properly. We’ve collected data on the biggest kettle brands, including Russell Hobbs, Bosch, Dualit, Breville, DeLonghi and Kenwood. This means we can tell you which brands we recommend and which ones you’re better off avoiding.

From the essential to the optional, here are some of the key features to consider when choosing a kettle. Minimum fill/one-cup boil The Kenwood ZJP30 dusk green kettle is the perfect kitchen appliance to make your tea and coffee experience a joy. With its modern design and advanced features, it's an excellent addition to any kitchen. Design Dome/pyramid kettles have a traditional domed shape with a handle on the top while jug kettles have a taller jug shape with a handle on the side You'll usually find the water gauge is larger and easier to see on a jug kettle, and the lid can be a bit more fiddly to remove on dome models. Plastic kettles tend to be lighter than stainless steel or glass - less than 1kg is nice and light.

If your kettle is still in working condition and you've simply gone off the design, you can donate it to charity, sell it to someone else or take it to a council reuse centre. Most travel kettles will have dual voltage, making them adaptable to whatever country you travel to (as long as you have the right adapter plug), but some also include cups, spoons, a tea/coffee container, and even a travel bag. Taking good care of your kettle – such as regularly cleaning out the limescale filter and using the correct mechanism to open the lid every time – could help you avoid falling victim to the three most common kettle faults. 1. Lid stops working properly (19%) Faulty lids, problems switching on or off and limescale issues are the most common kettle faults according to our survey of 9,103 kettle owners in the UK. You use your kettle every day, so you need to make sure that you won’t be left high and dry by an unreliable brand. That’s why, every two years, we survey thousands of Which? Connect Panel members to tell us whether or not they’re happy with their current kettle, as well as any problems they’ve experienced.

Kettles that are completely broken need to be disposed of correctly. Some shops, such as Currys PC World, will take your old kettle off your hands and recycle it on your behalf, but otherwise, you'll need to make other arrangements. You could book a slot for your local council to come and collect the broken item, but in most cases, it's cheaper to take it to your local recycling centre yourself. It's a common misconception that if a kettle boils faster, it must use more energy. However, we've found that isn't the case. Includes parts, labour, call out and delivery charges, so you can rest assured there are no hidden costs. Hot water taps dispense near-boiling water at the touch of a button. They’re a good way to streamline your kitchen surfaces and some claim to save energy as you’ll never have to pay to heat more water than you need.

There is a huge difference between the brands with the highest and lowest customer satisfaction scores. Any repairs that require dismantling your kettle or fiddling with the electrics should be carried out by a professional. Choose a Which? Trusted Trader to ensure you'll be dealing with a qualified repairperson who you can trust.Sadly, just because a kettle is 'sustainable' that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good all-around model - that's where our Eco Buy kettles come in. These are models we've chosen because they're excellent performers and are energy efficient. We also prioritise kettles from brands that perform well in our product experience surveys. Some kettles have fill indicators that are hidden behind the handle, making them hard to read. Look out for a large, clear windows if you want to be able to see at a glance how much water is left. Descale your kettle regularly - if it’s full of limescale, it uses more energy to boil the same amount of water. Therefore, if you're looking to cut down your energy bills you're better off choosing a fast kettle as it'll likely save you money in the long run. Nobody wants to spend half their holiday trying to boil water in a saucepan for that much-needed cup of tea. Travel kettles are compact and affordable, but some can be horribly slow or noisy.
