About this deal

The screen just doesn’t seem able to support a wide enough colour gamut to ‘keep up’ with its intense brightness, leading to some bright tones looking a bit thin and washed out versus some rivals.

With a beautiful frameless design, this stunning 4K TV will be the perfect centrepiece for your living room. There are shortcuts stationed at the bottom that include Freeview Play, Prime Video, Netflix, and Twitch, if you’re into your gaming streams. Viewing angles are also best head on, as moving to the side can lead to a reduction of colours and contrast. Happily, the 50UK4D63DB does indeed pick right up where its predecessor left off when it comes to serving up much better picture quality than you would reasonably expect of such a cheap 50-inch TV.

The UL5A63DB doesn’t look any different from the 55U7763DB tested by Trusted Reviews a few years back. The screen’s lack of brightness inevitably limits the TV’s colour volume range versus more premium LCD TVs, but aside from some occasional clipping (loss of shadow detail) in the very brightest, peak luminance parts of HDR images, the degree of colour saturation always feels in harmony with the available light. The lack of Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) would explain this as it affects the range of colours the Toshiba can portray. Function over form is less of an issue at the cheaper end of the market, but at least the UK4D tries in aesthetic terms. This means that the 55QA5D63DB will take in the best version available of any source it’s presented with.Watching the scene in Maz Kanata’s tavern, it does a respectable job of upscaling and creating some relatively noise-free detail. A great example of what we’re talking about can be seen in the sequence in It where Georgie chases his ill-fated boat down a rain-soaked street. With Toshiba you can find a TV that fits perfectly into your world, whether you are an entertainment junky, live to be connected or simply want a beautifully designed TV that gives you an out-of-this-world cinematic experience. Currently in the UK, TV programmes are only able to broadcast up to the HD 720p level so if you've got a HD Ready TV then you'll experience TV programmes at their finest levels of detail.

As the big brands appear to be shying away from the budget reaches of the TV market, it’s left the likes of Toshiba with its UK4D model in prime position to sweep up. The relationship with Dolby stretches to support for built-in Dolby Atmos audio, too, which is further joined by a DTS Virtual system. The mid-range is quite open and expressive, and escalates decently well to meet the challenge of big action movie moments. It feels like Toshiba’s non-Fire/Android TV models are standing still, while others are moving forwards. So eye-catching is the 50UK3163DB’s HDR performance, in fact, that we’re confident that if you were to put it side by side with any other TV in its class, its HDR efforts would leave its rival looking drab and dull by comparison. In fact, content levels are high, especially as Toshiba has also brought on board Freeview Play to cover Android TV’s blind spots when it comes to the catch-up apps for some of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters. First, the build of this TV is such that the panel sits low, meaning that a soundbar placed at its feet would block a good deal of the picture.
